Homeopathy for dogs and puppies
In a previous article on what to feed your animal mention was made of Black Walnut Hull and treatment of parasites. I get asked about this quite frequently so I''ll mention it first before going on to all the wonderful First aid homeopathic remedies. Black walnut will help your dog expel parasites. It is high in magnesium, is laxative and may help yeast overgrowth and flora imbalances. It has a reputation as a natural heartworm prevention
treatment but If you had found a dog and were intending to keep it I would suggest that it might be best to consult with a vet to find out if heartworm is already present in the dog and also if the dog has a very heavy parasite loading before proceeding with herbal treatment alone.
This article is directed at those who already have a basic knowledge of homeopathy terminology and are looking for guidance in treating. Generally dogs respond well to high potency remedies from 200C up but some chronic conditions will be better with 30C. For animals with emotional symptoms eg. fear of thunder high potency remedies will always be better. i will list the remedies from A -Z.
Apis mel. 200C and Aconite 200C for pain and shock, redness and swelling eg. a bee or wasp sting, a swollen paw pad from ant bites. Apis mel. 200C can be used preventatively for allergic reactions if a dog will be going onto lawn where bees are active.
Arnica 200C before and after any type of surgery, injury, bleeding, birthing. given 1- 2 hourly acutely. Use orally only and never on broken skin.
Belladonna 200C for heatstroke, heat exhaustion and anytime there is any condition involving heat, redness and throbbing. Acute doses every 5 minutes.
Bryonia alb. 200C for rheumatic or arthritic conditions that worsen with movement.
Conium mac. 30C Leg trembing or stiffness when getting up, particularly back legs. give 3 x a day and observe for improvement.
Cocculus 200C for dogs anxious and over excited about travelling in cars or flying.
Hypericum 200C for injury of legs or feet involving possible nerve damage.
Ignatia 10M to heal fears and anxiety from previous abuse or trauma. Also use with animals who are bereaved or separated from a companion. Suitable for dogs who are disturbed by a boarding kennel environment if the owner has no other options.
Phosphorus 1M for anxiety and sensitivity, sudden shocks like loud noises, fireworks, thunder, excessive fear of strangers.
Pulsatilla 200C for dogs that bark all day when the owner is absent.
Rhus tox 30C for stiffness and arthritic joints that improve with limbering up. Also used for general soreness and joint problem relief twice daily.
Sarsaparilla 200C for chronic cystitis where antibiotics haven''t helped. Try 2 doses daily for 10 days. In my experience cystitis can also be treated with correct chinese herbal prescibing so that antibiotics can be avoided.
Scullcap 200C for highly strung destructive dogs that are really unruly even when they get enough attention.
Tabacum 200C for dogs with a fear of being in a car or enclosed space when fear, quivering and a depressed demeanour are seen.
i hope you will use these suggestions as a springboard for exploring what your pup or dog actually needs to be treated correctly for any ailment.
